1978 TOJ Formula 2 Project

£30,000

Summary

A substantial package of tubs, bodywork, suspension, wheels, moulds and drawings offering the possibility of re-creating two Formula Two cars from 1978.

Full description

To be offered by Silverstone Auctions on Friday 24th February at the Race Retro Sale.

Guide Price: £20,000 - £30,000

The TOJ marque (pronounced Toy) was the work of Jorg Obermoser who established a race car construction business around BMW-engined 2-litre sports-prototype cars before entering International Formula 2 with the well designed F201 and F202. For the 1977 F2 season, six F201 were built, two for the works drivers, including future World Champion Keke Rosberg, and four for customers. For 1977, the  completely new TOJ Formula 2 appeared in the shape of the F202 driven by Porsche works endurance racer, Rolf Stommelen, and the emerging American Danny Sullivan.

On offer here is a collection of what we imagine are the remaining parts and components of the team cars from that year. The package consists of several chassis, bodywork, front and rear cast uprights, Ronal/BBS wheels, and moulds. There are also castings for four crossmembers, all the original drawings and a letter which appears to offer the rights to remanufacture these cars using the TOJ name. With various other parts, and of course a couple of BMW M12 engines, it should be possible to have two 1978 TOJ F2 cars up and running.

What an interesting project, with the provenance of two great drivers from the past and the growing interest in Formula 2 from what were undoubtedly the 'golden days' of European Formula 2.
